Tips for guys who goes shopping against their will

My female friends, girlfriend and my sister sometimes insist that I accompany them on their trips to Department Stores and sometimes in tiangge (thrift shops). Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to make alibis and get out. "Frustrating" as I usually describe it. 

Unfortunately, my female friends and also my sister (like most women) - - loves to browse, and the amazing thing is they have the power to persuade… against my will.

May 3, 2010 Monday is Declared as Special Non Working Holiday in the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines - President Arroyo today declared May 3, 2010 as a special non-working holiday in lieu of May 1, Labor Day. 

Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza said May 1, which falls on a Saturday, is not a holiday. He said this declaration is based on Republic Act 9492 or the holiday economics of President Arroyo.

RA 9492 mandates that most holidays, except those with religious significance, will be shifted to the nearest Monday. 

Labor Secretary Marianito Roque earlier ruled out any announcements of a wage hike from President Arroyo on Labor Day.

I may be about the same age as your moms, stable and accomplished, but I still worry about my future. Yes, my future… for my future includes my offspring and their children. It is an ultimate act of sacrifice that should go beyond a lifetime, a moral obligation that one will have to contend with for the sake of the next generation.

I must admit that there’s a sting in my heart every time I look at the present and see the gargantuan pile of rubbish that our generation will be passing on to yours. It had become too colossal that we have obstructed your ability to see and catch a glimpse of a promising future. I sometimes wonder if robbing a man of his dreams is as grave a sin as the act of stealing itself.

The Camwhore Paradise » La Virginia Resort and Hotel in Batangas

We usually have a 3-days 2-nights annual company outing but this year, we only had a 1-day tour at La Virginia Resort and Hotel last April 9.

The resort is in Mataas na kahoy, Batangas which is a two hour ride from Manila. It is set in the highlands of Batangas which offers a wonderful view of the Taal Volcano and the lake and plantations surrounding it. It is perfect for barkada trips and company outings because they offer several cottage accomodations to fit the needs of anywhere between 2 to 12 persons. Each cottage has its own set of unique ambience and character. Some cottages even provide cooking.

Are you living your life as an adventure?

I consider my life as a continuous adventure of risk-taking, contentment and successes. But it wasn’t always that way. During high school, I sensed that there was something bigger in life – something exciting and fulfilling – but I didn’t know how to go about getting it. Growing up in a small town in Occidental Mindoro where the norm was waiting for the day to be over, I strive to have a different way of life. I try my best to be an achiever – salutatorian of my high school class, a full government scholar during college and now striving to finish Graduate school. I’m not trying to brag here, it’s just that I thought that worldly success alone would bring me what I am searching for.

But after seven years of working as an employee, I have to face the hard truth that I am not on the journey I wished and planned.

Sleeping With Wet Hair Can Cause Blindness and Other Absurdities

My grandmother has this funny and bizarre collection of health ideas that I do not know whether some of it is true – but I’m sure most of it are just local absurdities. Maybe it is because of information deficiency and the belief in albularyo or local quack doctor.

These health beliefs always remind me what it was like to grow up in the province, fascinated and horrified by the adult world. Right now, it is really reassuring that the things I used to believe weren't so strange after all because I discovered that, somehow, most provinces across the Philippines, and even other countries, also have their own or same health legends. And the most common – sleeping with wet hair can cause blindness.

The Chick’s Lesson from Shit

This story is inspired by our little farm in Mindoro during my childhood days.

One windy afternoon, as the mother hen and her chicks are hurrying to return to the farmer's nipa hut to avoid the sudden gusts of amihan (or the strong trade winds), one of the chicks decided he doesn’t want to leave the farm yet. “You are all cowards,” he said to the other chicks. “After all, all I have to do is hide under the talahib grass to avoid the sudden gusts of amihan.”
