PROTECT QUIAPO's HERITAGE DISTRICT, SAVE MANILA'S HERITAGE, SAVE SAN SEBASTIAN

PROTECT QUIAPO's HERITAGE DISTRICT, SAVE MANILA'S HERITAGE, SAVE SAN SEBASTIAN
Quiapo is dubbed the heart of Manila. Aside from the busy Basilica of the Black Nazarene, Quiapo also boasts an underappreciated and threatened heritage district, east of Quezon Boulevard. Towering over the grand houses of this area is the mighty twin spires of the San Sebastian Basilica, the only all-steel church in East Asia.

We put a spotlight on the endangered and under appreciated heritage houses of Quiapo's Heritage District. Quiapo - the area east of Quezon Boulevard - survived the cataclysmic destruction wrought by the Battle of Manila in 1945.

Quiapo's Heritage District occupies a vast area including the streets Calle Hidalgo, Calle Arlegui, Calle Bautista, Calle Bilibid Viejo and Calle de Guzman. The area was spared from the destruction of World War 2, hence the great amount of surviving Manila heritage houses and other architectural gems. However, it is under threat from neglect, demolition and urban decay.

But what war has spared, the onslaught of rabid "developers" is now threatening to destroy. Quiapo provides Filipinos in Manila a "Viganesque" or Taal-like experience of what Manila looked like in a different time. Quiapo, together with Santa Ana, San Nicolas and San Miguel (with the addition of the commercial heritage buildings in Escolta-Binondo) is part of the endangered heritage zones of Manila. This set of drawings were made for the San Sebastian video by Diego Torres of Renacimiento Manila - with the exception of the Casa Boix artwork which is by Rancho Arcilla. The artworks were done using PowerPoint.

Save San Sebastian Church Video

This video tackles the short history of the San Sebastian Basilica and more importantly, the significance of the community that surrounds it. We put a spotlight on the endangered and under appreciated heritage houses of Quiapo's Heritage District.
