Touring the Philippines virtually: Experience new 'ASMR' travel [Binaural Walking Videos]

The Department of Tourism (DOT) launched on Saturday a program that would take travelers to Philippine destinations virtually by incorporating the natural sounds of the place.

The project, called the “ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) Experience the Philippines”, brings travelers ASMR videos that would allow them to tune into nature and be fully present in the moment.

The first video posted on DOT Philippines' Youtube channel is an ASMR tour of the Mountain Province in the Cordillera region, taking the viewers on a virtual trek of the mountain beginning from Barangay Macalana.

ASMR | BINAURAL Walking through a Rural Village in the PHILIPPINES MOUNTAIN PROVINCE

The trek to the mountain begins in Barangay Macalana. A guide leads you down a flight of stairs that winds through the village, past houses and across farms, over the narrow paths of the stone-walled rice terraces until you finally reach the real start of the trail.

This 360-degree immersive sound video puts the viewer right in the center of the action. Experience the sound where they happen—a gushing river to your left, a trickle of water on your right, and the thud of footsteps below.

Recorded using Ambisonics, audio is captured in a 360-degree sphere from the position of the microphone. For best listening results, put on a pair of open back headphones, but any headphones or even earbuds will work. You can also leave this on in the background as unobtrusive, calming noises as you go about your day.

The Department of Tourism invites you to go on an ambient sound trip and experience a destination through the distinct sounds that can be heard when all is quiet. When we travel, we go “sightseeing,” but it is with our ears that we hear and sense things all around us. This is the first in a series of videos that will explore the natural sounds of a place, allowing viewers to tune into nature and be fully present in the moment.

The 360-degree immersive sound video promises an experience that would put the viewer right in the center of the action, letting them hear the vivid sounds of a gushing river, a trickle of water, and even thuds of footsteps.

The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology defines ASMR as a “special perceptual phenomenon in which some people can experience a tingling, static-like sensation in response to some certain auditory or visual stimulations.”

It brings a pleasant feeling that one experiences in response to certain sounds, visuals, feelings, or descriptions. The sensation leads to contentment and relaxation.

“This project of the DOT is anchored on the concept that when people travel, they go ‘sightseeing’, but it is with their ears that they hear and sense things all around them. Through these videos, people get to share with the travel experience,” Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat said.

Four initial ASMR videos will be streamed on the agency's page, featuring several areas in the Mountain Province, including a journey to the summit of Mt. Amuyao.

"With Mountain Province currently under Alert Level 4, and the rest of the country under the observation of different alert level restrictions, these videos will allow viewers to experience the grandeur of Mountain Province no matter where they are, through their video devices," the DOT said.

The succeeding video series will explore Ilocos Norte, then destinations in the Visayas and Mindanao. Stay tuned for more videos!

ASMR | A Hike in a BINAURAL Forest in the PHILIPPINES with Trees, Birds, and Footsteps on Leaves

The trail leading to the summit of Mt. Amuyao is one long, challenging flight of stairs that takes you through pine trees, bamboo groves, and enchanting mossy forests, and rewards you with spectacular views of the Cordilleras to the west and the Sierra Madre to the east.

This 360-degree immersive sound video puts the viewer right in the center of the action. Listen to every bird chirp, insect hum, and crunch of leaf beneath the foot as if you are the one embarking on this hike.

ASMR | A Sunrise Amidst Clouds, BINAURAL Ambience on a High Mountain Peak in the PHILIPPINES

Soaring at over 2,702 meters above sea level, Mt. Amuyao is the highest peak in Mountain Province and one of the most challenging climbs of the Cordilleras. Watching the sunrise over a rolling bed of clouds is worth the frigid temperatures and grueling 3-to-5-hour assault to the summit.

This 360-degree immersive sound video puts the viewer right in the center of the action. Listen to the sounds that emerge from the solitude of the mountaintops—the wind through the trees, the echoes from the valley, even the mountain itself seems to be thrumming with low-frequency noise. Enhanced by film composer Juan Miguel Sobrepeña with ambient sound, the evocative soundscape can also serve as an unguided meditation.

ASMR | BINAURAL WATERFALLS IN PAGUDPUD, ILOCOS NORTE, WITH MOSSY FORESTS, CLEAR POOLS, AND RIVER

An 87-foot waterfall hides inside a dense virgin rainforest, its waters cascading down to a natural basin before pouring out into the river. Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte might be known for its beaches, but just a couple of kilometers from the national highway, a relaxed, 30-minute trek through verdant landscapes will reward visitors with the refreshing spray of Kabigan Falls, which can roar during the wet season.

ASMR | BINAURAL BEACH WALK IN SAUD BEACH, ILOCOS NORTE WITH FOOTSTEPS IN THE SAND AND SEA SPLASHES

Walk down a 2-km stretch of coconut tree-lined coast, feet sinking into the sand as the waves lap at your ankles. There’s hardly a person in sight, except for a few playing children. As you trod along, the terrain underneath you becomes more rocky and rough. You’ve reached the northernmost point of Luzon, discovering the desolate beauty of the true north, standing in the majestic embrace of the West Philippine Sea.

ASMR | BINAURAL BEACH, SUNRISE OVER SAUD BEACH IN ILOCOS NORTE WITH WIND, WAVES, AND WATER

One of Travel + Leisure’s 25 Most Beautiful Beaches in the World, Saud Beach in Pagudpud is the definition of tropical island perfection, sans the massive crowds. Listen to four hours of tranquil bliss as waves crash gently onto the shore, while Ilocos Norte’s iconic Bangui windmills spin hypnotically in the distance.
