Manila Reborn - The Rise, Fall and Rebirth of the City of Manila [VIDEO]

Manila is said to have been called "Pearl of the Orient" since the 1750s

A foreign tourist at the time enthused: "She is easily the queen of the cities of the East, and for one who knows how to find the buried treasures, a year of residence in Manila may be one of the most profitable in a lifetime."

Built heritage in prewar Manila--such as the art deco buildings, the "Walled City" of Intramuros, and Chinatown--vividly reflected the confluence of Asian, European, and American cultures.

After Spanish colonization of the country, American rule led to the institutionalization of education and the creation of public infrastructure which opened Manila to world trade and culture.

Cosmopolitan Manila was a city that "felt equally at home with the tango, the flamenco, the waltz, the jive, and Balinese dancing." It enjoyed an era called "Peacetime."

Manileños before the war were entertained by "vaudeville, talking pictures, a big basketball game, [or] a gala night at the Santa Ana Cabaret." Meanwhile, America sank into The Great Depression.

As the country's capital, Manila was important in World War II for its ports, airfields, edifices, shipyards, factories, and warehouses. But when the war first broke, the city was taken by surprise.

Gen. Douglas MacArthur had planned to liberate Manila as soon as the United States Army entered it on February 2, 1945. Little did he know that the Japanese had been setting up defenses since December 1944.

Mountain Climbing Etiquette: Mountaineering Guide for Beginners [EXPLAINER VIDEO]

Here is your code of ethics to follow on your next adventure - just a reminder. And for all you experts out there -- you should also pay attention because you are the people that others look to for proper outdoor decorum.

I hope this reminder helps to raise awareness and decrease frustrations when we are out enjoying our beautiful mountains together. Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section -- etiquette is a big discussion, after all.

Mountain climbing is a lifestyle sport involving hiking and trekking through rugged terrain, camping, climbing over rocks, fallen trees and logs, passing by thick vegetation, crossing rivers, and exploring the great outdoors while having fun in the process. This feat requires a great deal of patience, physical endurance, motivation, and presence of mind. Climbing mountains is truly rewarding: not only does it cultivate environmental awareness, it also develops a person's character by facing and conquering one's fears and ultimately conquering oneself, leaving the mountain climber with a great feeling of achievement.

Follow the mountaineer's creed:

Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but foot prints, kill nothing but time.
As a mountaineer, it is our job to be stewards of Mother Nature.

Here are a few important things to remember when climbing mountains:

Bringing Ogura Hyakunin-isshu Kyogi Karuta from Otsu, the Holy Land of Karuta, to the World

Otsu City considers karuta to be an important attraction for increasing tourism, and held a 'Kyogi Karuta Trial Lesson' for international students on Sunday, February 16th at Omi-jingū Shrine's Omi Kangakukan.

Otsu has hosted the "Competitive Karuta World Tournament" twice for the past two years, and believes that an increase in international karuta players will lead to an increase in international tourism in the area. They hope that the international students that joined the "Competitive Karuta World Tournament" will be able to spread interest in karuta within their countries once they return home.

The same karuta trial lesson is scheduled to be held on Monday (national holiday) February 24th at Omi-jingū Shrine's Omi Kangakukan. We are recruiting participants until Friday, February 21st.

Kyogi Karuta is known as a competitive sport that takes place on tatami mats, where cards are fought for and taken within 1/100th of a second, requiring memorization and concentration skills as well as good reaction speed and stamina.

In recent years, due to the influence of manga and the Japanese film Chihayafuru, there has been a considerably large increase in the number of players from foreign countries that have helped Kyogi Karuta grow in popularity. As a result, international students from Brazil, China, France, Indonesia, the Philippines, Russia, Sweden, Taiwan and other countries have applied to participate.

"Karuta Trial Lesson" was held on Sunday, 16th February, 6 international students participated.

On the day of the trial lesson, the international students learned the basics of karuta poems, how to arrange karuta cards, and actually played with Mr. Naoki Ishizawa from Otsu Akinota kai, who has a rank of 8th DAN in Kyogi Karuta.

Lies We Tell sa Office: Mga Palusot - Guilty Ka Din Ba? [VIDEO]
