BICOL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CONSTRUCTION OVERALL PROGRESS RATE NOW AT 72.2 PERCENT

Construction of the Bicol International Airport (BIA), which is touted as the “Most Scenic Gateway” in the country, is moving at a fast pace.

At present, construction work at the BIA has been logged at 72.2 percent overall progress rate, considering that actual construction of the airport only started in December 2016.

As of 13 January 2021, Package 2A of the BIA development project is now 88.2 percent complete.

Construction work in Package 2A is being handled by the Sunwest Construction and Development Corp. and covers the airport’s landside facilities, such as the Administration Building, Air Traffic Control Building, Crash Fire Rescue Building, and the Maintenance Building.

Package 2B of the airport project, meanwhile, is now 49.5 percent complete. Package 2B which is being handled by the E.M. Cuerpo construction company, covers the construction of the passenger terminal building (PTB), taxiway, runway extension, and other site development works.

Once completed, the BIA, which features the iconic Mayon Volcano as its magnificent backdrop, is expected to serve a total of 2 million airline passengers every year. The new international airport is also projected to boost air traffic in the region amid the existing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

The BIA initially started construction in 2008. However, development works were  uncompleted until 2012. When the Duterte administration came in 2016, the airport's Package 2A and 2B projects were continued.

An important component of the Duterte Administration’s “Build, Build, Build” Program, the BIA also intends to be an instrumental in the transformation of Albay Province, and the rest of the Bicol Region, into a strong economic contender.

Secretary Tugade stressed the importance of having continuous transport infrastructure developments such as the BIA, which will prove vital as the country starts recovering from the impact of COVID-19.

“It can’t be denied that the aviation sector has been one of the hardest hit by the pandemic. That’s why it is important that we finish the airport at the soonest possible time, as this will absolutely give the economy a boost. Gusto ko matapos ‘yan within the year dahil gusto na natin itong agad na mapakinabangan ng ating mga kababayan. As we ready for take-off, kung baga, dapat all systems go,” the transportation chief emphasized.

Under the current administration of our strong-willed President, Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte, with the resolute leadership of Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade, the BIA project is finally moving at a fast pace!

Currently, it has already reached 72.2% OVERALL PROGRESS RATE!

Envisioned to be a key infrastructure under the "BUILD, BUIILD, BUILD" program, the airport will pave way for the Albay province and the Bicol region to be transformed into an economic powerhouse, which will greatly benefit the Bicolaños for years ahead.

Bicol International Airport... COMING SOON.

The BIA, which has been dubbed as the country's 'Most Scenic Gateway,' due to its proximity to the iconic and majestic Mayon Volcano, now stands at 68% OVERALL PROGRESS RATE!

After almost 11 years of delay, the current status of the BIA project as of 02 September 2020 is as follows: Package 2A, covering the construction of landside facilities and other buildings, is 83% complete; and Package 2B, covering the construction of the PTB and runway extension, as well as the construction of the taxiway, drainage, and other site development works, is 38% complete.

Slated to be completed within the year, the airport is expected to welcome two million passengers every year, which will beef up air traffic and tourist arrivals in the region.

Once fully operational, this airport is envisioned to be a major factor in transforming Albay province, and the Bicol region into an economic powerhouse.

Indeed, the 'MOST SCENIC GATEWAY' IS NOW MAKING GREAT HEADWAY!

Bicol International Airport (Filipino: Paliparang Pandaigdig ng Bikol, Bikol: Pankinàban na Palayogan kan Bikol) is an under-construction international airport that will serve Legazpi, the capital city of Albay and the regional center of Bicol Region, in the Philippines. The airport will still have the IATA and ICAO code of the old Legazpi Airport, despite being located in nearby Daraga.

The airport is located in Daraga, an adjacent city of Legazpi. The ₱3.5 billion project is on a 200-hectare plateau 15 kilometers from Mayon Volcano. Some sources name the airport Southern Luzon International Airport (Filipino: Paliparang Pandaigdig ng Katimogang Luzon). It will replace the old Legazpi Airport, which is only 2 to 3 kilometers from the volcano.

Once opened, it will handle an estimated 2.2 million passengers every year.
