UPDATE as of January 2021

This January 2021, another huge milestone for the METRO MANILA SUBWAY PROJECT 🇵🇭🇯🇵
“A fully underground SUBWAY LINE”
A total of SIX (6) TBMs manufactured by JIM Technology Corporation in its factory in Tsurumi Prefecture, Japan, will be used to build the country’s FIRST-EVER underground mass transport system. These will be delivered to the Philippines beginning January this year, to commence with the construction of the partial operability section.
The subway, dubbed as the ‘Project of the Century,’ will stretch across 36-kilometers, connecting Valenzuela Depot to NAIA Terminal 3 in Pasay City and FTI. The project aims to reduce travel time from the Valenzuela Depot to NAIA Terminal 3 to just 45 minutes, from the original 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Unveiled on the virtual tour earlier was one (1) of the six (6) TBMs manufactured by JIM Technology Corporation in its factory in Tsurumi Prefecture, Japan. This is expected to arrive in the Philippines by January 2021 while the succeeding will be in February 2021. This will be used to fast-track the construction of the partial operability section of the MMSP.

The TBMs are integral in building the subway as these are used to excavate tunnels using a circular cross-section mechanism. TBM can also excavate through a variety of ground conditions, from hard rock to sand.

In February of this year, the major parts of a TBM were first revealed including the shield jack, cutter reduction gear motor, main bearings and articulation jack.

With its groundbreaking ceremony held in February 2019, the Metro Manila Subway will commence partial operations in 2022 and will be fully operational by 2026.

It is expected to serve 370,000 passengers daily in its first year of full operations, with a design capacity that can accommodate up to 1.5 million passengers per day.

This will interconnect with LRT-2 at Anonas Station; with the North-South Commuter Railway at Senate, FTI, and Bicutan Stations; and with LRT-1 and MRT-7 at the Common Station, to ensure interconnectivity and convenience for passengers. This will also feature technological advancements and disaster-resilient strategies with the guidance of Japan’s expertise in railways, that aims to strengthen the Subway’s structural integrity amid regular occurrence of typhoons and earthquakes. The Department of Transportation will continue to work triple time to expand the country's railway network to deliver safe, reliable, efficient and extensive mass transportation to give a more comfortable life for the Filipino people.
